Kapahu Living Farm 360° Panoramas

Overlooking Kapahu Farm

The Kipahulu 'Ohana invites you to view panoramic scenes of Kapahu Living Farm, its taro patches and surrounding areas in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park.

The photos were taken in late 2002, so the farm has changed some since then, with more lo'i opened up and the hale completed, but these 360° scenes provide a lovely glimpse into the beauty of Kapahu at that time. There are six panoramic shots, five from within the farm, and one from the edge of the pali just below the farm.

QuickTime required

Get QuickTime First, if you don't already have it, you will need Apple's Quicktime player, which you can download free for Windows and Mac platforms.

Connection Speed

There are two sets of panoramas, one with larger images for high-speed Internet connections (with files averaging about 700KB in size), and one for dial-up connections (with files averaging under 300KB in size). You can switch between versions using the link at the top of the page.

Navigating Between Panoramas

Aerial View (small)

With each set, there are two ways to navigate to view the individual files:

  1. In the aerial view, you will see six colored points which represent the location of each view. Click on the color point to see the view. To help orient you, the line extending out from each point shows the initial direction of the view. Note that the aerial photo was taken some time before the panoramas, so some features are slightly different, for example the hale is barely visible as a bare frame.
  2. You can also move directly between views by using the navigation links at the top, with links color coded to match the points in the aerial view.

Looking Around the Panoramas

When viewing an individual panorama, once the file has downloaded completely you will see the opening view. To rotate the view and look around you in a circle, simply click and hold in the photo and then move your mouse in the direction you wish to rotate, left or right. You can also rotate using your left and right arrow keys.

Zoom in using the + button at the bottom of the image, or press the Shift key (although the resolution will quickly become blurry); zoom out using the - button, or press the Control key.

Canoe Plants Hot Spot Links

The larger panoramas (for high speed connections) now have an added special educational feature - the various Polynesian introduced plants shown in the images are hotlinked to the "Canoe Plants of Ancient Hawaii" page for each plant. The Canoe Plants pages contain descriptions and methods of identification, propagation methods, and cultural and medicinal uses.

For example, in the opening perspective of the first view, overlooking the farm, you can click on the lo'i in the center to learn more about kalo, click on the kukui trees at right to learn about them, and click on the banana cluster at left to learn more about mai'a.

When you move your pointer over a hotspot, the pointer icon will change to indicate a linked area. To show all hot spots, click on the up-arrow with the question mark inside located in the control portion of the frame - labeled "Show Hot Spots" - and all linked areas will be revealed.
