Kipahulu 'Ohana receives two grantsThe Maui News KIPAHULU - The Kipahulu 'Ohana has received nearly $7,000 in two grants from the Hawai'i Community Foundation. Kipahulu 'Ohana is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the practice and promotion of Hawaiian culture, the conservation and restoration of natural resources and the development of culturally based economic opportunities in the remote East Maui area of Kipahulu. The Hawai'i Community Foundation gave the nonprofit group a $5,000 grant from its Organizational Capacity Building program. Scott Crawford, Kipahulu 'Ohana's executive director, said the funds will be used to conduct an organizational assessment to assist in developing management, fund-raising and leadership capabilities of the organization. The Hawaii Alliance for Community Based Economic Development will be retained to facilitate the organizational assessment process. The group also received an automation grant of $1,952 from the Atherton Family Fund. The grant will be used to purchase a computer. "The Kipahulu 'Ohana has been in existence for almost 10 years, and over that time has steadily made tangible accomplishments," said Crawford. "Now as the organization grows and matures, expanding our projects, budget and staffing, we want to identify important capacity-building actions to take to ensure that we have a solid foundation for the future." The Kipahulu 'Ohana has with Haleakala National Park a cooperative agreement that provides for the organization to work with the Park Service "to preserve, maintain, restore and interpret the Kipahulu ahupuaa for public use and enjoyment."
