Hale Ku'ai building session this weekend

The Kipahulu 'Ohana is planning another building session this weekend for our hale ku'ai near the NPS Visitor Center, with Kumu Francis Sinenci and his students. We can always use extra hands. It is good fun and a great opportunity to learn about traditional architecture techniques.

Last weekend we finished the fixed purlins, so this weekend we'll be finishing up other major pieces of the framing and adding the floating purlins, and last step before thatching begins.

On both Saturday and Sunday, we plan to start around 9 or 10 in the morning and finish around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Lunch is provided, but items to bring include: water, work shoes or tabis (something other than slippers), gloves, a shady hat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellant.

If you would like more information, directions, or want to let us know that you'll be there, please give me a call at 248-8673 or email ohana@kipahulu.org.

Here's how it looked on Saturday, as the top fixed purlin is tied in on the facing side.

Here's a picture from Sunday as the first holo piece is installed at an angle, which stabilizes the structure and keeps it from rocking:
